High Vibe Q&A: Chelsey Belliveau
Name: Chelsey Belliveau
Occupation/Job Title: Photographer
Years of experience: 8
How and when did you get into photography?
My grandmother is an avid photo taker, she brings her 20 year old camera everywhere with her and sends the film off to be developed! So I grew up with her camera and she would give us disposable Kodak cameras as gifts a lot! Then as I got older my uncle had a DSLR camera because he took photos as a hobby and I took an interest in it because I was always interested in what he was doing! During my first year of university, I got my first Nikon d3200 for Christmas and then my first lens for my birthday in May and I haven’t stopped since then!
What does your typical day look like?
I’m currently on maternity leave and finishing up a degree in social work (I also have a degree in Nutrition!) so right now I’m in my final placement 4 days a week! So Monday-Thursday I get up, feed the baby and make us breakfast, then I go to placement for the day and go to the gym after, once I pick up the baby I make everyone supper and the evenings are spent editing, answering any emails or messages, doing homework! Then I have a bath and a snack and go to bed! On Friday’s I spend the whole day with the baby and on weekends I’ll book sessions
What are your favourite types of shoots to do?
I love engagement sessions and couple shoots! I love capturing the dynamics of a relationship and making people laugh. They’re such easy, fun sessions and I’ve never not enjoyed one! I really love it when people bring their dogs too!
Do you have a favourite setting for shooting?
I prefer to shoot outdoors, typically after supper because the light is amazing from the sun setting (that golden hour glow ) & I shoot all my sessions in manual mode!
Best part about being your own boss?
Right now having the opportunity to be on maternity leave and work on my business has been amazing! Definitely the flexibility of hours is the best part! In the beginning as we were adjusting to parenthood it was really rough trying to schedule and edit around naps (because there was barely any!) so now as she’s gotten older we’ve found a groove that works and I love it!
What is the hardest part about being your own boss?
Trying to find the time to work on all my goals that buzz around my head! The hardest part for me is trying to decide what is my priority because I want to work on ideas all the time!
You stated in a past Instagram post that you always wanted to be a writer. Are you still writing? Do you think you’ll ever pursue the dream further?
I really love to write and by focusing on good content for the blog and Instagram has been a really fun way to express my creativity outside of taking photos! It’ll always be on my bucket list to write a book!
Number one tip on how to juggle being an entrepreneur and a mom?
Do only what you love! By focusing on working on what you love to do the juggling doesn’t feel like a juggle, it feels like a fire igniting your passion to teach your children to pursue their dreams.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to get into the photography business?
Don’t wait! You don’t need the best cameras or lenses or equipment to start! That’ll come in time! Do some free sessions, second shoot some weddings and build your portfolio!
