How often do you think to yourself “I can’t wait to get home.”
Your home is your space. It’s where you should feel most comfortable. It’s where you can come in without knocking, kick off your shoes and just be yourself. We spend a lot of time and money making our homes as accommodating to our needs as we possible can. But did you know that your home could be lowering your vibe? Yup, your home can be causing your cortisol levels to rise which brings about stress and anxiety.
Have you ever considered that we humans are the only species that don’t live out in the natural world? We’ve separated ourselves from nature, from Mother Earth, our original home. This separation from our home can cause conflict on the subconscious level. Why do you think we decorate our homes with wood and plants? Why do we let the breeze flow through and the sun shine in? We’re trying to bring nature into our homes because, deep down, something is telling us that this aspect is missing from our spaces and our lives.
So, aside from leaving home and setting up camp in the wilderness, there are several stress-inducing aspects of your home that you can control. Let’s look at a few ways your home could be lowering your energetic vibration.
You’re doing most of the work around the house
Walking into your home at the end of a busy day and visibly taking note of all the things that have to be done, knowing that YOU are the one who will have to do them all, can be super stressful. You want to come home to relaxation and comfort, not a mountain of tasks to complete. If you live alone, create shorter to do lists over a span of several days instead of trying to get it all done at once. Then, once you’ve finished the day’s work, you can sit back and relax. If there are others living under your roof, they should be shouldering part of the load. There’s no reason for it to all fall on you. Start delegating!
You’re living with people you’re not too fond of
And no, I don’t mean that you’re annoyed at your SO for throwing their wet towel on the floor three feet from the hamper (again) or are considering how you can send your kid away for the summer because they’ve got a bad attitude. I’m talking about sharing a space with someone who genuinely isn’t good for you. Maybe it’s a roommate you just don’t get along with. Maybe it’s a toxic friend. Maybe it’s a BF or GF you’re planning on leaving but are having a hard time getting around to it. Maybe you’re in some kind of abusive relationship. Regardless of what the situation is, if the people in your home are causing you constant stress or discomfort, it’s time to find a new situation.
There’s little natural light
Research shows that natural sunlight stimulates the production of serotonin, which is the neurotransmitter responsible for stabilizing your mood. You need to let in natural light into your space in order to raise your vibrations. Throw your curtains open in the morning or sit by the window allowing the sun to shine down on you (my cat does it all the time and she seems pretty content!) If you don’t have access to too much natural light (basement apartments, low light areas, etc.), try to get out as much as possible during the day.
Your aesthetic isn’t making your happy
If your home isn’t a reflection of yourself and your personality, you’re not going to be fully happy in this space. Even if you can’t decorate your whole space the way you’d prefer, try to find a room or a corner that can be just for you and add all the decor that makes you smile. Fill it with colours that resonate with your soul. Decorate with things that remind you of good memories.
You’re too plugged in
Yup, we definitely live in a technological world. It’s become so easy to fill our homes with all the latest tech gadgets. However, there’s something to be said for keeping it minimal. We don’t need electronics all around us at all times. I’m not telling you to give up your TV, your phone or your computer. But it’s very possible to overdo it, and it’s become the norm to be addicted to it. Unplug. Read a book. Look outside or *GASP* open your door to check the weather or temperature instead of asking Alexa from your bed the minute you wake up.
Your space is cluttered and disorganized
With Marie Kondo and the concept of minimalism being huge buzzwords lately, it’s no secret that many are currently on the declutter train. And they’re all on to something. The less clutter we have, the more space for the energy to flow through our homes freely. It’s time to clean up, to donate, to throw out and to organize our physical environments so that we can feel the same inside ourselves.
